PARENT'S GUIDE TO YOUTH WRESTLING http://www.youthwrestlingguide.com/Youth%20Wrestling%20Guide.pdf Explanation: NOVICE vs OPEN vs DUALS Throughout the year we will be competing in a variety of competitions: Novice, Open, and Dual tournaments. A novice tournament is designed for wrestlers in their 1st or 2nd year only. These tournaments are great for experience, and gives the athletes a chance to compete against other athletes who are new to the sport as well. Usually wrestlers will get between 2-3 matches at a novice tournament, and many cases each wrestler wins an award (trophy, medal, etc.) An open tournament is a competition open to any wrestler who wants to attend. Unlike a novice, wrestlers are not kept out due to experience levels. A dual tournament is a tournament where matches are wrestled, much like at the junior high and high school level. A team will be selected, athletes will compete in their weight class, but the team will compete rather than the individual. Because there are no age divisions, older wrestlers and those with experience are chosen to compete in duals rather than a wrestler who is new to the sport. If parents who are new to the sport have any questions, please feel free to ask a coach.
